HONORING TRADITIONS
Native communities view health through the traditional concepts of balance, a consideration of mind, body, and spirit, and a sense of the well being for all. These teachings have carried Native people through many challenges over hundreds of years because they place a core value on maintaining wellness rather than simply treating illnesses or problems.
WHAT WE DO
Healthy Native Communities Partnership (HNCP) helps communities realize their own vision of wellness. The HNCP mission is propelled by asking Native communities two very simple questions: What does health and wellness mean for your community? Who can really build the momentum for wellness and change?
The HNCP supports the trickle up of capacity building, leadership development, partnership, and networking from the wisdom and strength of local communities.
WHY WE DO IT
Today, the more than 4.1 million American Indians and Alaska Natives, representing over 566 Tribes, are suffering the worst health status of any group in America. Native populations are impacted largely from preventable illnesses, at much higher rates and at much younger ages than the rest of the U.S. population.
HOW WE DO IT
When it comes to fighting a staggering health crisis, investing in communities to generate change works. HNCP knows that people in local communities have the passion, tradition and commitment needed to take the first and most powerful steps toward wellness. Our role is to connect groups to tools, and with each other, so they can mobilize innovative strategies that are right for their communities.
